DAVEY JONES ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is influenced by film more than any other medium. I was interested in movies and special f/x from a very young age. On the rare occasion when I wasn’t at a movie theatre, I was busy absorbing everything I could from magazines such as "Starlog" and "Famous Monsters of Filmland."

My work also reflects an interest in fine art. My own experiments began with oil painting, yet even as I grew more proficient with a brush, I found that my interest in film would often compete for the time I spent pursuing art.  Only now looking back do I see that it is because of these varied interests (as well as many years of experimentation) that I have been able to develop the techniques and sensibilities that I use in my work today.

Behind every one of my concepts there is a story and beneath each story exists an underlying mythology. It is my task as the works' author to find that single defining image from the story and present it to the viewer as an isolated framework from which they may deconstruct using their imagination. In many respects, that is the power that the single frame has over motion pictures. The viewer is left to create for themselves that which surrounds the image. In the end, I believe this to be more satisfying than having every miniscule detail handed to you on a silver platter.
